DATE AND HAZELNUT CHOC CHIP BARS

hazelnut date choc chip protein bar recipeThis is low carb, high protein, gluten free biscuit bar recipe with so many health benefits that it should have its own RDA!

Hazelnuts are awash with positive health benefits; they help to prevent damage to red blood cells as they are loaded with Vitamin E, they are full of B vitamins like riboflavin, folates and niacin to help maintain energy balance, and they are also a great source of Linoleic Acid, specifically Alpha Linoleic Acid which is broken down by the gut into DHA and EPA Omega 3 fatty acids. They are also a source of Physterol, a steroid alcohol known to prevent heart disease and cancer. Add to that they have significant amounts of calcium, potassium, zinc and iron they contain and you really can’t afford not to bake these biscuit bars can you!

Then there’s the dates: Dates contain more beneficial vitamins and minerals that I could list here, but it is worth saying that as well as keeping you “regular,” they are renowned for increasing sexual stamina, increasing sperm count, and increasing testicle size and weight1! You can thank me later!

CREAMED RICE

Creamed rice is one of my favourite sources of carbs and a great alternative to oatmeal. I use it as a post training carb source as it absorbs quickly (you could use it pre-workout as well), and also for a late night treat if I’m following a carb back loading approach. In addition, it has a healthy balance of amino acids for a carbohydrate, so when added to the vanilla protein power in the recipe this becomes a pretty anabolic dessert. If that weren’t enough, the fact that white rice is a mild diuretic means that it actually has anti-inflammatory properties as well to help ease those aches and pains.

DARK CHOCOLATE PROTEIN BARS

DARK CHOCOLATE PROTEIN BAR RECIPEIf you’ve ever checked the ingredients list on your favourite store bought protein bar, you’ll know that along with the protein your getting a tonne of ingredients you can even pronounce and more often that not, a hefty handful of sugar thrown in as well. When you factor in the high cost of these treats, the only logical step is to put them back on the shelf and make your own. I’ve had a few goes at this and have finally settled on something so simple that it only has 6 ingredients, and so tasty it literally is the best protein bar I have ever eaten; seriously you’ve got to give these a go.

The ingredients list is:
8 scoops of chocolate protein powder
2/3 cup of ground almonds
1/2 cup of milk
2tbsp desiccated coconut
2tbsp peanut butter
100g sugar free dark chocolate

HARISSA PULLED PORK

HARRISA PULLED PORK LOIN SLOW COOKER RECIPEThis is a nice and simple, protein and nutrient packed slow cooker dish. Harissa originated from Tunisia and is a spicy, smokey sauce used all over Northern Africa and is now available in most stores pretty cheaply. If you can’t get hold of it, try some smoked paprika powder and some chillies, or a jar of chipotle peppers instead.

The ingredients list is short; for 2 people you’ll need:

1lb Pork, (I go for loin as its pretty much the leanest cut)
1tbsp Harissa
1tsp Mustard
1 Clove Garlic
Small handful of fresh Thyme, or 2 teaspoons of the dried stuff
1 Small Red Onion
1 Cup Chicken Stock

COURGETTE FRITTERS

courgette zucchini fritter recipeThis is a nice way to disguise the nutritious courgette if you don’t like the things in their normal form. As well as the deception though, they taste amazing and are a great way to up your intake of Potassium, Vitamin A and Folate.

You’ll need:
2 Courgettes
Half a cup of grated Parmesan or similar
2 Eggs
4tbsp Oatmeal
1tsp Chilli flakes, or chopped fresh chilli

THAI CHICKEN MEATBALLS

I picked this recipe up from a woman in Thailand who was making these on a cooker tied to the side of her motorcycle. Yeah, you read that right. Check out the picture BELOWand you’ll notice the handlebars in the foreground: everything else in the picture is attached to that bike in some way or another. She drove it as if she were tacking a yacht.

EASY THAI CHICKEN MEATBALL RECIPE
Anyway, in comparison to the complexities of riding a motorcycle with everything including the kitchen sink attached, this is as basic as they come. You’ll need:
